In New Brunswick, modern art began in Saint John in the 1930s, with such figurative painters as Miller Brittain and Jack Humphrey bearing witness to the spirit of the times. It was only in the early 1960s that a number of Acadian artists in the Moncton area began getting together to promote art that diverged from the traditional. The founding of the Université de Moncton (1963), which opened the door to visual arts education, encouraged the development of contemporary art. This virtual exhibition presents 20 contemporary artists who are part of the Acadian scene.
